Madras is an upcoming Tamil drama film directed by Ranjith and produced by Studio Green. The film stars Karthi and Catherine Tresa in the leading roles with Santhosh Narayanan composing the film's music.
Studio Green signed up Pa. Ranjith to direct a film for their production house after they had bought and distribute the director\\\'s successful previous venture, Attakathi (2012). In December 2012, Ranjith confirmed that he would shortly begin work on a project titled Sarpatta Paramparai with Karthi in the lead role, though production was subsequently delayed. In July 2013, it was announced that the pair would collaborate on a new script, with Santhosh Narayanan signed on as composer, G. Murali as cinematographer and Praveen as editor.Reports initially suggested that Nazriya Nazim would portray the leading female role in the film, while Nithya Menen and Lakshmi Menon were also linked to the role.
The venture was officially launched in October 2013 with a small ceremony, while it was revealed that Catherine Tresa, who make her debut in Tamil films with the project. The team had initially titled the film as Kabali, but later opted to change it to Kaali. Karthi worked exclusively for the film in the final quarter of 2013, losing considerable weight and sporting a new look for the venture.In mid-December 2013, it was revealed that sixty percent of the film was complete, with scenes shot extensively around Chennai. Two songs from the film were noted to have been complete, an illusion montage and a death gaana song, both choreographed by Satish.The film was titled as Madras in May 2014.
