After Chennai Super Kings entered the play-offs of the 2012 Indian Premier League, Dhanya took to Twitter to vent her frustration at the elimination of the team she had supported, Royal Challengers Bangalore. Referring to the long-standing Kaveri River water dispute, she tweeted an insult directed at Chennai and subsequently faced backlash on social media for her comments. Dhanya consequently said that she had quit the Tamil film industry and would return the advance of a film she had signed fearing tension, but made a comeback in Tamil with Raja Rani.

She played a cameo in the 2013 Telugu film Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. Her first venture in a leading role, the Telugu film Chinni Chinni Aasa (2013), was released in November 2013, followed by Gangaraju Gunnam's Chandamama Lo Amrutham.
