Shaji Kailas's debut as a director was in 1989 with News, starring Suresh Gopi in the lead role. Scripted by Jagadish, this investigative thriller was an average grosser. But, with this film, Shaji succeeded in gaining attention of film viewers. But his second release Sunday 7 PM, came out in 1990 was a big flop. Later in the same year, he directed Dr. Pasupathy, a political satire, with Innocent in a leading role. Dr. Pashupathi, written by Renji Panicker, ended up as one of the biggest grosser of the year. Suhasini Mani Ratnam, commonly known as Suhasini, is an award winning south Indian actress. She made her film debut in 1980 with the Tamil movie Nenjathai Killathe. Suhasini was born in Chennai, the daughter of actor of Charu Hasan - the elder brother of Kamal Hassan. In 1988, she married Mani Ratnam. The couple have a 15-year old son. Suhasini is a trained costumer designer, hair stylist and Cinematographer , the first girl student to graduate from the Madras Film institute.

Bharathi was born in a Marathi-speaking family in Karnataka. She was married to the legendary actor of Kannada cinema Vishnuvardhan on 27 February 1975 in Bengaluru. They have two children namely Keerthi and Chandana. Her husband Dr. Vishnuvardhan died on 30 December 2009.
