Anaika Soti is an Indian film actress who has appeared in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films. After making her debut in Ram Gopal Varma's bilingual film Satya 2 (2013), she went on to feature in Vasanthabalan's Tamil period film Kaaviya Thalaivan.


Anaika Soti was born on 14 January 1991 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh and soon after shifted to Hong Kong with her family for four years. She subsequently moved to Mumbai and studied in Panchgani throughout her education, before moving to Malaysia to finish her high school and briefly engaged in a diploma in fashion designing, before returning in Mumbai. After beginning a career as a model, she met director Ram Gopal Varma on an elevator in 2012, who offered her a role in one of his future ventures. She was subsequently signed on to appear in his bilingual crime film, Satya 2 (2013), shot in Hindi and Telugu, based on the Mumbai underworld. The film and Anaika's performance opened to negative reviews, with a reviewer from The Hindu noting "Anaika tries too hard to be erotic and fails miserably in a role that makes her look dumb instead of naïve", while Rediff.com noted she was a "bad actress".


She is currently filming for Vasanthabalan's Tamil period film Kaaviya Thalaivan starring alongside Siddharth, Prithviraj and Vedhicka. She was signed for the film while working on Satya 2, and subsequently shot for the film in rural Tamil Nadu, revealing she worked on acting like a princess to get into character.

Seema Biswas (born 14 January 1965) is an Indian film and theatre actress from Assam who shot into prominence with the role of Phoolan Devi in Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen (1994). She has a reputation for performing strong character roles. Biswas won the 1996 National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Bandit Queen. She won the 2000 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the 2006 Best Actress Genie Award for her role as Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta's Water (2005).

Personal life and education

Biswas was born in Nalbari, Assam, to Bengali Parents Jagdish Biswas and Meera Biswas.  Her mother, an early influence, was a history teacher and a pioneering figure for female theatre artistes in Assam; and she came into contact with artists like Bhupen Hazarika, Phani Sarma and Bishnuprasad Rabha early in life. She studied Political Science at Nalbari College, and later joined the National School of Drama, New Delhi. After graduating from NSD in 1984, she joined the NSD Repertory Company.

Career

Seema Biswas acted as the heroine in Krishnan Kartha's Amshini (Hindi) which entered the Indian Panorama Section of Filmotsav 1988. However the general belief is that Biswas debuted after Shekhar Kapur watched her perform in NSD Repertory Company, and offered her a role in Bandit Queen. Although she had earlier acted in Bengali cinema, this was her first big break into Hindi cinema, and she arrived with a bang.

Rooted firmly in theatre, she refuses to be typecast and has worked in a variety of films and character roles. She has also worked in a number of Marathi, Malayalam, and Tamil films. Some of her Marathi films are Bindhast, Dhyaas Parwa, and Lalbaug-Parel.

She has been honoured with the Life Membership of International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy Of Film & Television by the director Sandeep Marwah.

In 2014, Seema Biswas has been included in the prestigious five member jury board of 45th International Film Festival of India(IFFI) to be held from 20 to 30 November at Goa.

Suruli Rajan was a Tamil film comedian/character artiste. He was a recipient of Tamil Nadu State Government's Best Comedian Award for the year 1981–82.

Biography

Suruli Rajan was born in 1938 in Periyakulam, near Theni. His father Ponniah Pillai worked as an accountant for farm owners of the adjoining areas in Theni. The child was named after the Suruli Velappar, the family deity at the temple atop a hill graced by the picturesque Suruli Falls.

Suruli Rajan lost his parents one after the other, and had to discontinue his schooling. He moved to his brother's house in Madurai and worked as an apprentice mechanic in a neighbourhood workshop.  Bitten by the acting bug, he acted in several amateur stage plays in Madurai before moving to Madras in 1959 in search of greener pastures.

In spite of his passion for acting opportunities were few and far between. A sudden spate of opportunities in stage plays filled him with heartening optimism. He worked with various drama troupes, including those of O.A.K.Devar, pisir Ramarao, T.N. Balu and in Karunanidhi's 'kagithapoo' staged in aid of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party's election fund. It was filmmaker Joseph Thaliayath of The Citadel Film Corporation Pvt. Ltd who brought Suruli Rajan to cinema, first in a brief appearance in Iravum Pagalum in 1965 and soon after in a more noticeable comic role in Kaadhal paduthum paadu the year following.

His friendship with T.N. Balu earned him memorable roles in blockbusters by T.R.Ramanna like naan and MoondRezhuthu. Despite his young age Suruli Rajan was offered older roles in many of his early movies. Two other significant roles in his early years were the Madras Tamil spewing cameo in APN's Thirumalai thenkumari (1970) and that of the devout fisherman in Aadhi parasakthi (1971). With his unique intonation and a flair for the absurd, Surulirajan rose to popularity in the late 70s.

Though at times bordering on the bawdy, he seldom failed to elicit a laugh. Suruli's brilliant portrayal of a niggardly rustic in M.A.Khaja's Maanthoppu Kiliye (1979) fetched him rare plaudits and has earned a place of pride in the annals of the immortal comedy sequences of Tamil cinema. 'It never rains, but pours' they say, and Suruli's capers had become a mandatory inclusion in most movies of the time. He created a record by acting in not less than 50 movies in a single year in 1980.

His career was cut short due to his untimely death in 1980 while he was in the peak of his career.

Sobhan Babu (born Uppu Sobhana Chalapathi Rao) (January 14, 1937 – March 20, 2008) was an Indian film actor known for his works exclusively in Telugu cinema. He made his film debut in Bhakta Shabari (1959), but Daivabalam (1959), was released earlier at the box office. Sobhan babu has garnered five state Nandi Awards for Best Actor, and four Filmfare Awards for Best Telugu Actor.

Background

The son of Uppu Suryanarayana Rao, Babu had three sisters Dhanaranga, Jhansi and Nirmala and a brother, Sambasiva Rao. Babu completed his initial schooling in Kuntamukkula Mylavaram. He pursued his Intermediate in Vijayawada and finished his degree at Andhra-Christian College in Guntur. Later, he studied law in Chennai, but ultimately discontinued it.

He married Shanta Kumari on 15 May 1958; they had a son, Karuna Seshu and three daughters: Mrudula, Prashanti and Nivedita.

Babu's first film was Bhakta Sabari. Chitrapu Narayana Murthy was his first director. His film Manushulu Maarali ran for 25 weeks which was a record at that time.  His first colour film was Kannavari Kalalu.For the first time he went abroad for a film shooting for Ramudu-Parasuramudu. He made a dual role in Potti Pleader for the first time.

He was honored with several Nandi Awards by the state of Andhra Pradesh. He was given the honorific, "Natabooshana", which became his last name in movie credits.

During the 1970s he was also linked romantically to Jayalalitha who later went on to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In reply to a report in a 1978 issue of the Bombay-based Star and Style magazine, implying that she and Shobhan Babu had parted ways, Jayalalitha confirmed that the relationship was strong and they were "going steady".

In a film career as a matinee idol, spanning more than thirty five years, Sobhan Babu was starred in a variety of roles in works such as Seetarama Kalyanam (1961), Nartanasala (1963), Lava Kusa (1963), Veerabhimanyu (1965), Bangaru Panjaram (1969), Manushulu Marali (1969), Tara Sasankam (1969), Kalyana Mandapam (1971), Chelleli Kapuram (1971), Sampoorna Ramayanam (1972), Sharada (1973), Manchi Manushulu (1974), Jeevana Jyothi (1975), Soggadu (1976), Kurukshetram (1977), Mallepoovu (1978), Gorintaku (1979), Karthika Deepam, (1979), Mosagadu (1980), Maharaju (1983), and Aswamedham (1992).
